Federal Government -
Security & Privacy

Data
Hackers today are global and driven by politics as well as greed. Worse, they are more sophisticated and better armed. With an arsenal that includes viruses, worms, sniffers, mail spoofing, and Trojan horses, they are intent on attacking the U.S. government to access confidential information, steal constituents' identities, or disrupt services and wreak havoc.

To counter these threats, federal agencies must eliminate any vulnerability by embedding robust security throughout their digital domains. They must protect every LAN's perimeter from intruders or denial of service attacks. For a critical measure of safety, they should lock down the LAN's interior, permitting only authorized users to access confidential servers and applications. They also must safeguard communications over their WANs and the Internet, particularly as agencies increasingly share vital data. To be effective, their solutions need to be standards-based to simplify management and ensure interoperability with current and future systems.

Voice
Telephony is vital to the functioning of the government. Throughout their domains, federal agencies must safeguard their voice traffic as vigorously as their data traffic, guaranteeing that sensitive conversations always remain confidential. They must also protect their telephony against any disruptions and should disaster strike, they must be able to quickly restore services. To meet these needs, their voice platforms should be reliable, resilient, flexible, and standards-based to simplify management and reduce recovery costs.

Wireless
Wireless solutions offer a strong business case for extending connectivity while reducing costs. But with their untethered links, they can pose security concerns for federal agencies. Agencies require wireless systems that deliver the most powerful security available while still supporting data and voice traffic. To ensure wireless connectivity remains a practical solution, agencies need standards-based safeguards that easily interoperate with wired LANs, allowing IT staff to extend seamless security throughout the network.
