What is a firewall?

What is the purpose of a firewall?
A:
The purpose of a firewall is to prevent theft, destruction, and modification of data, to filter incoming data of unsafe or objectionable content, and to log events which may be important to the security of your network.

Q:
How do I set up filters?
A:
By default, if a packet does not meet any description given in a section, it will be allowed to pass. However, rules can be made to accept only certain packets, and the section can be ended with the rule, "deny," in which case all other traffic will be prevented. To explicitly permit all other traffic, the rule is "permit."
