AT&T's ISP Business Excels Where It Counts: Performance

AT&T is one of the largest ISPs (Internet service providers) in the U.S. According to benchmarks conducted by Visual Networks, AT&T’s service excels in several key categories, including 24-hour connect success, business-hour connect success, modem connect speed, download time, and throughput.

AT&T Vice President Sid Overbey is responsible for the company’s global remote access network. He gives some of the credit for the network’s performance to 3Com’s Total Control platforms. “Currently about 90 percent of our remote access platforms are Total Control,” he says. “They help us achieve high performance levels in areas that really contribute to customer satisfaction.”

Total Control CommWorks architecture has enabled AT&T to take a leadership position in the new generation of IP-based communications services, while maintaining seamless interoperability with legacy systems.

AT&T uses the Total Control platform extensively to pro-vide dial-up Internet access service, multiprotocol remote access, and virtual private networks to tens of thousands of business customers. Their 3Com solution allows AT&T to manage all the ports in all their points of presence worldwide from one central location.

“Performance and reliability are our major selling points, ”according to Overbey. “Our relationship with 3Com has assisted in making AT&T one of the best performing ISPs anywhere."
